Suleyman Kuyumcu Halic University Faculty of Arts and Sciences Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics 34280 Findikzade, Istanbul-TURKEY Mobile: +90 (505) 682 85 88 www.suleymankuyumcu.com.tr_ _______ KuyumcuS@gmail.com Objectives I would like to have a PhD in molecular biology of evolution and pursue an academic career in the future. Especially I interests in Evo-Devo and Molecular Evolution. Education 9/1998-6/2001 Buyukkoyuncu Science High School in Konya-Turkiye (GPA 4.92/5.00) 9/2001-present Golden Horn (Halic) University, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics Awards received 9/1998-6/2001 Full scholarship from Private Buyukkoyuncu Science High School according to the performance in LGS (high schools entrance exam), only successful students are selected for science high schools and the most successful ones win a scholarship. 9/2001-present Full scholarship for undergraduate study from Golden Horn (Halic University) for being the top 9047th in (approximately) one million and five hundred students in the University entrance exams in Turkey. Experience 9/1998-6/2001 Education in Buyukkoyuncu Science High School According to their performance in LGS (high schools entrance exam) successful students are selecting for science high schools (prestigious high schools in Turkey.) Students are educated to acquire scientific knowledge and to learn scientific thinking. 9/2001-present Education in Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics in Halic University The Molecular Biology and Genetics program has courses on General Biology, Cell biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics etc. Students are educated and trained to have theoretical and practical skills. Lecturers teach up-to-date data in their area, and if available basic laboratory techniques on the topic and give additional information in the moral and ethical side of it. 7/2002-9/2002* Internship in Burc Molecular Genetics Diagnosis and Research Lab. The training contained basic diagnosis methods such as electrophoresis (PAGE), centrifugation, PCR etc. These methods are used to diagnose some diseases (Hepatitis B-C, tuberculosis etc) and some mutations and polymorphisms (Hereditary thrombophilia, Apo-E genotyping, Phase I and Phase II gene polymorphisms=CYP450, CF, congenital deafness=Cx26 gene etc). *I interned three days a week in 2002- 2003 and I still continue intern two days a week in 2003-2005. 2/2003 (2 weeks) Intership at Bilkent University with Prof. Kamruddin Ahmed. We were doing research on Moraxella Catarhallis (ligation, transformation, growing bacteria culture etc.) in microbiology laboratory. 5/2003 (1 week) Internship at Istanbul University Genetics Research Center. The center specializes in cancer research. This training improved my knowledge about cancer and leukemia. 8-9/2003 (8 weeks) Internship at Rutgers University (NJ - USA) with Dr.Chi-hua Chiu. I studied on Hiodon`s HOX genes with Dr. Karen Chambers. We used her project aimed to characterize Hiodon's HOX family genes, regular PCR, colony PCR, Mini-prep, gel purification, frozen immortal, ligation, and transformation. I learned, Nucleotide and Protein blasting, Mac Vector program, preparing primer (manual) etc. on computer. More over I got ready to handle any project myself. 7-9/2004 (10 weeks) Internship at Barcelona University with Dr. Jordi Garcia-Fernandez. I studied on BMP and HOX genes. BMP project was run by Elia Benito but after three weeks for training I started to run HOX project with Dr. Fernandez. In the same time I breeded Amphioxus (branchiostoma florida) in laboratory conditions in this period. I used standard procedure to find HOX gene in a new animal (isolating RNA to blasting sequence). Other interests We are preparing a proposal for 6FP program of European Commission in Burc Molecular genetics Diagnostic and Research Laboratory. I am writing an article about evolution on www.biyoturk.com which is a portal for Turkish biology students. The article's general title is "Synergy Essays on Changing" I taught Biology, Physics, Algebra, Chemistry and Geometry to high school students, at the weekends, 2001-2004. Proficient in Windows-based programs XP and 2003 editions ( Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Front Page, and Publisher), and beginner level knowledge for programs such as SPSS, Office Access etc. I learnt some Macintosh programs such as Mac vector useful for molecular biology laboratory. I am familiar with computers so I think I can learn a computer program in no time. I have finished a ten-week authorship course (certificate from Journalists and Authors Society, Istanbul) I was at school volleyball and wrestling team in High School. I won prizes in wrestling. I can play a traditional music instrument called “ney” at beginner level. References Upon request…
